There is a lot of information available on the roadways, directing the flow of traffic and interacting with drivers. Pavement markings help you just like road signs and traffic signals. They are used to warn and direct drivers and to regulate traffic. It's actually quite simple to interpret roadway markings. There are two colors involved and drivers must understand the difference between what the colors mean just as much as the difference between broken lines and solid lines and their meanings. YELLOW LINES mark the center of a two-way road used for two-way traffic.

You may pass on a two-way road if the yellow centerline is broken. When a solid and a broken yellow line are together, you must not pass if you are driving next to the solid line. Two solid yellow lines mean no passing. Never drive to the left of these lines. WHITE LINES painted on the pavement indicate traffic traveling in your direction?

Broken White Line: you may change lanes if it is safe to do so. Solid White Line: requires you to stay within the lane and also marks the shoulder of the roadway. DO NOT PASS - When there are double solid yellow lines. DO NOT PASS - When a solid yellow line is on your side. WHEN YOU MAY PASS BROKEN YELLOW LINE - You may pass if movement can be made safely.

TURN LANES - Turn lanes are found in the middle of some two-way streets. The lane is marked on both sides by two painted lines—inner line broken, outer line solid. Use this lane only for making left turns. STOP LINES - A stop line is a wide white line painted across the street. When a crosswalk is not marked, stop at the corner.

Check for traffic before crossing. CROSSWALKS - A crosswalk is a part of the pavement where the white sidewalk lines would extend across the street, and it is for pedestrian traffic. EDGE OF PAVEMENT - White lines Edge lines are used to outline and separate the outside edge of the pavement from the shoulder. Right edge lines are marked with a solid white line and left edge lines are marked with a solid yellow line. Every driver needs to be extra careful when the weather is bad. From a safety standpoint, the premise of red-light cameras is that they minimize the number of drivers who run through red lights. As a result, other drivers and pedestrians are in a safer position. In some cases, drivers are less likely to get traffic tickets because they are wary of the red-light cameras as opposed to taking their chances with getting caught by a traffic police officer.

The ticket revenue generated by the cameras is also useful in community development. When community leaders focus on revenue goals with red-light cameras, they may overlook the data on safety specific to a particular interaction. Sometimes, communities actually experience a net loss from red-light cameras because the installation and technology expenses are greater than the revenue generated from tickets.
