The Prolific chip was copied and found its way into a lot of generic adapters, so Prolific changed the driver so that it doesn't work with a non-Prolific chip. There are older drivers without the nerf though that do work. I have various eManage software and firmware right up to the final release, and I've got a working driver for the adapter.
